अकूपार¦ पु॰ न कूपमृच्छति ऋ--अण्। वृहत्कच्छपे। न कुपृथ्वीं पिपूर्त्ति पृ--पालनपूरणयोः अण् बा॰ दीर्घः, न कुत्-सितं पारं गन्तव्यदेशो यस्य वा, पृ॰ दीर्घः। महापारेसमुद्रे, दूरगामिनि सूर्य्ये च पु॰। पृ॰। अकूवारोऽप्यत्र।

अकूपार¦ m. (-रः)
1. The sea or ocean.
2. A tortoise.
3. The king of turtles, the tortoise supposed to uphold the world.
4. A stone or rock. अ neg. कू the earth, and पृ to cherish. or अ neg. कू for कुत्सित contemptible, vile, and पार bank, boundary: there are other etymologies, and वृ being substituted for पृ the word is sometimes written अकूवार।

The sea, the receptacle of waters; अकूपारः सलिलो मातरिश्वा Rv.1.19.1 (समुद्रो$प्यकूपार उच्यते अकूपारो भवति महापार: Nir.); न ह्यकूपारवत्कूपा वर्धन्ते विधुकान्तिभिः H; अकूपारमिवापारं पारयिष्यामहे कथम् । Śivabhārata 31.44.

Akūpāra : m.: A mythical king of tortoises, living in the lake Indradyumna (saras) 3. 191. 9, 14.


A. Long-lived: Of fabulous age, he recognized king Indradyumna whom even Mārkaṇḍeya (sage), Prākārakarṇa (owl), and Nāḍījaṅgha (crane) could not; king Indradyumna, in bygone days, had placed a thousand times Akūpāra first (upahitapūrvaḥ) while establishing the fire altars (agniciti) 3. 191. 14-18; [for the use of tortoise in Agnicayana cf. Tait. Saṁ. 5. 2. 8. 4-5; ĀpŚrS. 16. 13. 10; 16 25. 1.].


B. Myth: Requested by gods and demons to support mountain Mandara at the time of churning the ocean; Akūpāra agreed, whereupon Indra with his tool fixed the top of mountain Mandara on his back (kūrmeṇa tu tathetyuktvā pṛṣṭham asya samarpitam/ tasya śailasya cāgraṁ vai yantreṇendro 'bhyapīḍayat) 1. 16. 10-11.
