पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

अवन्तिः, पुं, (अव + झिच् ।) अवन्तीदेशः । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥ नदीविशेषः । इत्युणादिकोषः ॥ यथा, “प्राग्ज्योतिषाः कामरूपा मालवाः स्युरवन्तयः” । इति हेमचन्द्रः ॥ अपि च । “अनूपास्तुण्डिकेराश्च वीतिहोत्रा अवन्तयः । एते जनपदाः ख्याता विन्ध्यपृष्ठनिवासिनः” ॥ इति मत्स्यपुराणे ९५ अध्यायः ॥

अवन्ति¦ पु॰ अव--झि। मालवदेशे। स च वृ॰ स॰कर्म्मचक्रविभागे
“अथ दक्षिणेन लङ्केत्युपक्रम्य
“आक-[Page0429-b+ 38] रवणावन्तिकदशपुरनोनर्द्दा” इति उक्तः दक्षिणदेशस्थः। तत्र शिप्रा नदी महाकालनामा शिवमूर्त्तिविशेषः उज्ज-यिनी राजधानी। तत्पुरीपरत्वे स्त्री वा ङीप्।
“अवन्तिनाथोऽयमुदग्रबाहुरित्युपक्रम्य
“असौ महा-कालनिकेतनस्य वसन्नदूरे किल चन्द्रमौलेः”।
“अनेन यूना सह पार्थिवेन शिप्रातरङ्गानिलकम्पि-तासु विहर्त्तुम्? च रघौ तथावर्ण्णितम्। ज्योतिर्वि॰विक्रमनृपवर्ण्णने
“यद्राजधान्युज्जयिनी महापुरीसदा महाकालमहेशयोगिनी। समाश्रिता प्राण्य-पवर्गदायिनी श्रीविक्रमार्कोऽवनिपो जयत्यपि” तस्मिन्सदा विक्रममेदिनीशे विराजमाने शमवन्तिकायाम्। सर्व्वप्रजामण्डलसौख्यसम्प्रद्बभूव सर्व्वत्र च वेदकर्म”। तथाच अवन्ती उज्जयिनी च नामान्तरं यथोक्तं सि॰ शि॰।
“यथोज्जयिन्याः कुचतुर्थभागे प्राच्यां दिशि स्याद्यमकोटिरेव। ततश्च पश्चान्न भवेदवन्ती लङ्कैव तस्याः ककुभिप्रतीच्याम्”। इयञ्च लङ्कास्थानात् मूवृत्तषोडशांशे मेरुपर्य्यन्तगतरेखायां समसूत्रस्थाने स्थिता यथोक्तं तत्रैव।
“निरक्षदेशात् क्षितिषोडशांशे भवेदवन्ती गणितेनयस्मात्। तदन्तरं षोडशसंगुणं स्याद्भूमानमस्मात्बहु किं तदुक्त्या”। इंलण्डीयमानचित्रवेदिनस्तु समसूत्रस्थानात् किञ्चिदन्तरपश्चिमस्थेति वर्ण्णयन्ति। इयञ्च मोक्षपुरी
“अयोध्या मथुरा माया काशी काञ्चीअवन्तिका। पुरी द्वारवती चैव सप्तैता मोक्षदायिकाः”। पुरा॰। भा॰ उ॰ प॰ जम्बुखण्डविभागे जनपदगणनायाम्

2. The name of a river. E. अव to preserve, Una4di affix झिच्; the derivative is irregular. Avanti, is one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, to die at which secures eternal happiness: the word is also written अवन्ती and अवन्तिका।

N. of a city, the modern उज्जयिनी, one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, to die at which is said to secure eternal happiness; cf. अयोध्या मथुरा माया काशी काञ्चिरव- न्तिका । पुरी द्वारावती चैव सप्तैता मौक्षदायिकाः ॥ The women of Avanti are said to be very skilful in all erotic arts; cf. आवन्त्य एव निपुणाः सुदृशो रतकर्मणि B. R.1.82.

N. of a river. m. (pl.) N. of a country and its inhabitants; its capital being उज्जयिनी on the river सिप्रा; and there is also the temple of महाकाल in the suburbs. [According to Hemachandra अवन्ति is synonymous with Mālava or the modern Mālavā; but the latter country covered in ancient times, as now, a wider area than Avanti, as Bāṇa applies the name to a neighbouring kingdom in the east, whose capital was Vidiśā on the Vetravatī or Betvā.
