कोकिलः, पुं, (कुक् आदाने + “सलिकल्यनिमहि भडि- भण्डिशण्डिपिण्डितुण्डिकुकिभूभ्य इलच्” । उणां १ । ५५ । इति इलच् ।) स्वनामख्यातकृष्णवर्णमधु- रस्वरपक्षी । (यथा, रामायणे । २ । ५२ । २ । “भास्करोदयकालोऽयं गता भगवती निशा । असौ सुकृष्णविहगः कोकिलस्तात ! कूजति” ॥) तत्पर्य्यायः । वनप्रियः २ परभृतः ३ पिकः ४ । इत्यमरः । २ । ५ । १९ ॥ परपुष्टः ५ कालः ६ वसन्तदूतः ७ ताम्राक्षः ८ गन्धर्व्वः ९ मधुगायनः १० वासन्तः ११ कलकण्ठः १२ कामान्धः १३ काकलीरवः १४ कुहूरवः १५ अन्यपुष्टः १६ मत्तः १७ मदनपाठकः १८ । इति राजनिर्घण्टः ॥ (अस्य गुणा यथा, -- हारीते १ स्थाने ११ अध्याये । “कोकिलः श्लेष्मलो ज्ञेयः पित्तसंशमनस्तथा” ॥ मूषिककल्पान्तर्गतशुक्र-विष-जातीयविशेषः । तद्दंशनजनितलक्षणानि यथा, -- “ग्रन्थयः कोकिलेनोग्रा ज्वरो दाहश्च दारुणः” ॥ इति सुश्रुतेन कल्पस्थाने षष्ठाध्याय उक्तम् ॥) अङ्गारः । इति त्रिकाण्डशेषः । (छन्दोविशेषः । इति वृत्तरत्नाकरः ॥)

कोकिल¦ m. (-लः)
1. The Kokila or Koil, the black or Indian cuckoo, (Cuculus Indicus.)
2. A firebrand, a lighted coal. E. कुक् to seize, (the heart,) and इलच् affix: the Kokila makes a prominent figure in Hindu poetry, and is supposed, by his musical cry, to inspire pleasing and tender emotions.

KOLIKA (KOKILA) : This is the name of a rat. Kokila is a character in the story known as Biḍālopākhyāna, told by Nārada to Dhṛtarāṣṭra. Once a cat began to perform penance holding up both of its hands, on the bank of the Gaṅgā. After a long time birds and rats began to come very close to it believing that it would not hurt them. They made the cat their leader. The wicked cat daily ate a rat secretly. Thus the body of the cat grew stronger day by day and there appeared a steady decrease in the number of the rats. Among them there was a wise rat called Kokila. He understood the deceit played by the cat. So proclaiming independence he and his fellows ran away and saved themselves. (M.B. Udyoga Parva, Chapter 160).
