(I)--a Mind-born son of ब्रह्मा, born of his thumb, and father of मूर्ति. A progenitor and guardian of the world, born for the creation of worldly beings. फलकम्:F1:  भा. III. १२. २२-3; Ib. I. २२. 4; IV. 1. 6.फलकम्:/F Married प्रसूती, daughter of स्वायम्भुव Manu. Had sixteen daughters of whom he gave thirteen to Dharma, one to Agni, one to पितृस्, and one to शिव. फलकम्:F2:  भा. On this दक्ष burst into anger against शिव and insulted him saying he had eyes like a monkey, was a breaker of law and convention, lord of the भूतस् and गणस्; he then cursed that शिव should have no more share in sacri- fices and went away. Nandi got enraged at this and im- precated a curse on दक्ष that he would lose all knowledge of आत्मन्, and assuming the face of a sheep, would become dull-witted. भृगु then pronounced a counter-curse that those propitiating शिव shall become पाखण्डस्. फलकम्:F3:  भा. M. १३. ११-55, ६०; १८३. २२-3.फलकम्:/F Appointed by ब्रह्मा as the overlord of all प्रजापतिस्, दक्ष began the sacrifice of बृहस्पतिसव to which all gods went in groups. सती also expressed her desire to go and requested permission of शिव, who reminded her of the insult offered to him. फलकम्:F4:  Ib. IV. 3. (whole).फलकम्:/F As she was persistent, she was allowed to attend. Going, she found that she was not properly welcomed by her father. The enraged सती sat facing the northern direction in yoga and cast off her body by means of the fire of समाधी to the distress of gods and others. On this the गण followers of सती attacked दक्ष, when भृगु created a class of gods, ऋभुस् who vanquished these गणस्. फलकम्:F5:  Ib. IV. 4 (whole).फलकम्:/F Having heard of all this from नारद, शिव grew angry; out of his anger sprang वीरभद्र who was ordered to ruin दक्ष's sacrifice. The beard of भृगु was cut off, and दक्ष's head was severed from his body and thrown into the दक्षिणाग्नि. फलकम्:F6:  Ib. IV. 5 (whole). वा. ३० (whole).फलकम्:/F The Gods waited upon ब्रह्मा who proceeded to कैलास. He conciliat- ed शिव and pleaded for the revival of दक्ष and continuation of his यज्ञ promising a share to him. फलकम्:F7:  भा. IV. 6 (whole).फलकम्:/F शिव agreed but [page२-059+ ४३] said that दक्ष should have the face of the sheep, Bhaga, Mitra's eye, and भृगु the beard of a sheep. Agreeing to this ब्रह्मा went with शिव to the sacrificial hall of दक्ष. Now दक्ष began to praise शिव. When विष्णु's offering was poured to secure the continuation of the sacrifice, विष्णु presented himself in person when दक्ष, ऋत्विक्स्, Sadasyas, Rudra and others present, spoke in his praise. Pleased at this, Hari remarked there was no difference among the त्रिमुर्तीस्. दक्ष brought the यज्ञ to a successful end. फलकम्:F8:  Ib. IV. 7 (whole); २९. ४२.फलकम्:/F
