मध्यदेशः, पुं, (मध्यश्चासौ देशश्चेति ।) देश- विशेषः । तत्पर्य्यायः । मध्यमः २ । इत्यमरः ॥ तस्य सीमा यथा, मनुः । २ । २१ । “हिमवद्बिन्ध्ययोर्मध्यं यः प्राग्विनशनादपि । प्रत्यगेव प्रयागाच्च मध्यदेशः प्रकीर्त्तितः ॥” विनशनं तीर्थमेदः । मां ध्यायति स्मरतीति केसति मद्ध्यो दकारवानिति साञ्जे । मनो धश्चेति यप्रत्यये नस्य धे सति चतुर्थमात्रवा- नति रूपरत्नाकरः । इति तट्टीकायां भरतः ॥

मध्यदेश¦ m. (-शः)
1. The middle region; part of India, bounded by Ku- rukske4tra on the north, Alla4ha4ba4d on the south, the Hima4laya mountains on the east, and the Vind'hya mountains on the west; comprising therefore the modern provinces of Alla4ha4ba4d, Agra4, Delhi, Oudh, &c.; the northern limit is elsewhere defined to be the disappearance of the Saraswati

Madhyadeśa, Madhyama deśa : m. (sg.): The midland country and its people.
A. Epic events:
(1) Vṛṣṇis (2. 13. 51, 59) and Mādhavas (2. 13. 52) who, along with Kṛṣṇa, left Mathurā (2. 13. 44) and went to Kuśasthalī in the west always remembered the Madhyama deśa (vīrāḥ smaranto madhyamaṁ deśaṁ…) 2. 13. 59;
(2) Many kings of midland (bahavo rājāno madhyadeśajāḥ) attended the Rājasūya of Yudhiṣṭhita 2. 31. 17;
(3) The warriors of Madhyadeśa along with others comprised the unassailable royal army of Kauravas (rājacamūṁ…durādharṣair…kurumadhyadeśair…) 5. 158. 19-20.
B. Past events:
(1) Once a large settlement of Brāhmaṇas existed in a part of the Madhyadeśa between the rivers Gaṅgā and Yamunā and adjacent to the mountain Yāmuna (madhyadeśe…gaṅgāyamunayor madhye yāmunasya girer adhaḥ) 13. 67. 3; Yama told Brāhmaṇas of this settlement the importance of gifting sesame seeds and lamps 13. 67. 15-27;
(2) A Brāhmaṇa named Gautama (12. 162. 33) of the Madhyadeśa (madhyadeśīyaḥ 12. 162. 29) happened to visit a settlement of the Dasyus (dasyugrāma 12. 162. 37) and lived there; when another Brāhmaṇa later visited the same settlement he recognized Gautama as one who belonged to the Madhyadeśa and asked him how he came to live like a Dasyu (madhyadeśaparijñāto dasyubhāvaṁ gataḥ katham) 12. 162. 44; when asked by Virūpākṣa, the chief of Rākṣasas, Gautama told him that he belonged to Midland but he lived in the house of a Śabara (madhyadeśaprasūto 'haṁ vāso me śabarālaye) 12. 165. 5.
