शंतनु/ शं--तनु m. (also written शांतनु)N. of an ancient king with the patr. कौरव्य(he was fourteenth descendant of कुरु, son of प्रतीपand younger brother of देवापि, and usurped the sovereignty whilst the latter became a hermit ; he married गङ्गाand सत्य-वती; by the former he had a son named भीष्म, and by the latter चित्रा-ङ्गदand विचित्रवीर्यSee.
