धन्वन्¦ mn. (-न्वा-न्वं) A bow. m. (-न्वा) A country scantily supplied with water, a desert, a waste. n. (-न्वं) A firm spot, land, ground. E. धन्वि Sautra root, to go or move, (by or on which,) and कनिन् Una4di affix; also with अच् affix धन्व।

1. Dhanvan, ‘bow,’ is found frequently in the Rigveda[१] and later.[२] It also occurs in the compounds iṣu-dhanva, ‘bow and arrow,’[३] ājya-dhanva,[४] ‘having clarified butter for its bow,’[५] adhijya-dhanva, ‘bow with string fixed,’ etc. Cf. Dhanus.
2. Dhanvan, ‘desert,’ is repeatedly mentioned in the Rigveda[६] and later.[७] Death from thirst in the desert was not rare,[८] and the value of a spring in the desert was fully appreciated.[९] The great desert east of the Sindhu (Indus) and the Śutudrī (Sutlej) is possibly referred to in one hymn of the Rigveda.[१०]
