पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

मेधातिथिः, पुं, (मेधायाः धारणावद्वुद्धेरतिथि- रिव ।) मनुसंहिताटीकाकृत् । मुनिविशेषः । यथा, श्रीभागवते । १ । १९ । १० । “मेधातिथिर्देवल आर्ष्टषेणो भरद्वाजो गौतमः पिप्पलादः ॥” (प्रियव्रतपुत्त्रः स च शाकद्बीपाधिपतिः । यथा, श्रीमद्भागवते । ५ । २० । २४ -- २५ । “यस्मिन् हि शाको नाम महीरुहः स्वक्षेत्र- व्यपदेशकः । यस्य ह महासुरभिगन्धस्तद्द्वीप- मनुवासयति । तस्यापि प्रैयव्रत एवाधिपति- र्नाम्ना मेधातिथिः ॥” * ॥ सप्तदश द्वापरयुगस्य व्यासः । यथा, देवीभागवते । १ । ३ । ३० । “मेधातिथिः सप्तदशे व्रती ह्यष्टादशे तथा ॥” प्रजापतेः कर्द्दमस्य पुत्त्रः । यथा, मार्कण्डेये । ५३ । १५ । “अग्निध्रो मेधातिथिश्च वपुष्मांश्च तथापरः ॥” दक्षसावर्णिमन्वन्तरे सप्तर्षीणामेकतमः । यथा, मार्कण्डेये । ९४ । ८ । “मेधातिथिर्वसुः सत्यो ज्योतिष्मान् द्युतिमां- स्तथा । सप्तर्षयोऽन्यः सबलस्तथान्वो हव्यवाहनः ॥” नदीविशेषे, स्त्री । यथा, महाभारते । ३ । २२१ । २३ । “चर्म्मण्वती मही चैव मेध्या मेधातिथिस्तथा । ताम्रावती वेत्रवती नद्यस्तिस्रोऽथ कौशिकी ॥”)

(II)--a son of Priyavrata, and appointed lord of the शाकद्वीप (प्लक्षद्वीप-वि। प्।). He divided it among his seven sons and retired to a hermitage. भा. V. 1. २५ and ३३; २०. २५; Vi. II. 1. 7, १२.

(IX)--a son of अजमीढ and केशिनी. वा. ९९. १६९.

(X)--a sage of the IX epoch of Manu. Vi. III. 2. २३.

Medhātithi, Medhyātithi (‘having a guest at the sacrifice’) appear to be the names of one and the same man, a descendant of Kaṇva and a famous Vedic Ṛṣi, to whom the authorship of various hymns is attributed in the Anukramaṇī (Index). To him Indra is said in the Rigveda to have come in the form of a ram: this myth is perpetuated in the Subrahmaṇyā formula recited by the priest while the Soma is being carried within the sacrificial enclosure, when Indra is hailed as ‘ram of Medhātithi.’ He appears also as a rival of Vatsa, whom he accused of low birth, but who convinced him of his error by undergoing a fire ordeal (cf. Divya). In the Atharvaveda he is mentioned with many other sages, and occurs elsewhere also as a sage.
