पृष्ठभागोऽयं यन्त्रेण केनचित् काले काले मार्जयित्वा यथास्रोतः परिवर्तयिष्यते। तेन मा भूदत्र शोधनसम्भ्रमः। सज्जनैः मूलमेव शोध्यताम्।

वात्स्यः, पुं, (वत्सस्य गोत्रापत्यम् । वत्स + “गर्गा- दिभ्यो यञ् ।” ४ । १ । १०५ । इति यञ् ।) मुनिविशेषः । यथा । वात्स्यसावर्णिगोत्रयो- रौर्व्वच्यवनभार्गवजामदग्न्याप्नुवत्प्रवराः । इत्यु- द्वाहतत्त्वम् ॥

VĀTSYA I : A hermit belonging to the Guruparamparā (the line of teachers). It was this hermit Vātsya who wrote the famous Vātsyāyana Sūtra (the science of Amour). He was one of the guests at the serpant-sacri- fice (Sarpasatra) of Janamejaya. (M.B. Ādi Parva Chap- ter 53, Stanza 9). He visited Bhīṣma who lay on the bed of arrows. (M.B. Śānti Parva, Chapter 47, Stanza). See under Guruparamparā.

Vātsya, ‘descendant of Vatsa,’ is the name of one or more teachers. One is mentioned in the Śāṅkhāyana Āraṇyaka, where the Aitareya Āraṇyaka in the parallel passage has Bādhva. Others occur in the Vaṃśas (lists of teachers) of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad as pupils of Kuśri, Śāṇḍilya, or another Vātsya, while a Vātsya is mentioned in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa.
