Śāṅkhāyana as the name of a teacher is not mentioned in the Kauṣītaki Brāhmaṇa, but it occurs in the Vaṃśa (list of teachers) at the end of the Śāṅkhāyana Āraṇyaka,[१] where Guṇākhya is given as the authority for that work. In the Śrauta Sūtras[२] the name of Śāṅkhāyana never occurs, but the Gṛhya Sūtras[३] seem to recognize as teacher Suyajña Śāṅkhāyana. In later times[४] the school flourished in Northern Gujarat. Śāṅkhāyana appears in the Taittirīya Prātiśākhya[५] along with Kāṇḍamāyana.
